My holiday break and preping for 2020

With the holidays behind us, I guess we need to head back to reality. However, I did not sit relaxing and fiddling my thumbs this holiday season! I decided to really dive into the community aspect of gaming and get to know a few streamers while on my break, all while replaying a few of my favourite games. I worked my way through Final Fantasy 9 for a bit but I really got hooked on playing through Mass Effect 1-3 all over again. I just can’t keep my hands off Garrus!! Right now I’m currently playing the 4th game, Andromeda, so subscribe to the free newsletter at the bottom of the blog post to see a kickass Mass Effect review and my thoughts on how the series progressed through the years we all played them. But that’s not the point of this article, so we’ll get back to the point!

Sometimes we all need to take a little break, take a deep breath and just catch up with family and friends. For me that also included a lot of video games and watching a lot of streamers stream their favorite games. With this, I got to discover a few new streamers and games that I have not seen or played through before. Thanks to the success of The Witcher series on Netflix almost everyone is streaming, playing or watching it and it doesn’t surprise me at all. I’ve never actually read, played or watched anything Witcher related apart from Ruthy and Zakeroph’s stream but now thanks to seeing how much they’re enjoying it and how deep and dark the story is I think I want to dive right in! At some point, I definitely want to try the games, series and books (bookworm alert).

Taking this break from writing over the festive period gave me a chance to refresh my mind and spend some time reading articles from other blogs who have inspired me, which I hope will help improve my writing! I’ve had really helpful feedback from people who have read my very first blog post to the ones I have recently been releasing. I personally don’t think I have improved very much but seeing people support me and the things I’m writing really gives me hope that someday I will be able to look back on all of them and see how far I’ve come :)

I also watched a friend of mine (someone that doesn’t stream) play Blair Witch. At first I thought it was going to be a fun game to watch since we both can’t handle anything so scary, however I quickly found out that wasn’t going to be the case for us. We didn’t get very far as he was VERY VERY NERVOUS about the game and probably stopped playing 20min in. I guess I’ll just have to watch someone else stream it as there is NO WAY I am going to play it by myself!!

Seeing as Christmas is usually the time of year we get new games and shiny toys I figured that I wanted to take a step back into the past and maybe look at some of the classic “retro” games that made up my childhood. I think that might help inspire me and help me with future blog posts!!

Once I received really harsh criticism for reviewing games that were really old and it took me a while to accept it. I personally don’t see the issue with reviewing ‘older’ games because as it gets older, newer generations miss out on the video games that were the starting point for all of us. I mean I would have never played some of the older classics if not for my dad who played them before me… and besides, I could maybe help someone out there find a hidden gem! That’s more than enough reward for me!

Everyone has their own opinions and that is fine, but instead of trying to be kind or constructive about it they lash out and treat others badly. It can be hard to remove myself from my work and that can make the mean comments difficult to deal with. Especially when I put so much of myself into my work. Taking the time off really helped me understand and reflect on what I wanted to do with the blog and what I wanted it to become. I won’t be taking a break every time someone does not agree with me, I think I should take it as it is and learn from it!

With so many new games coming out this year I cannot wait for people to stream them. I am really excited for the remake of Final Fantasy 7 and I cannot wait to see players, old and new, react to the game! I also can’t wait to review more streamers on the blog as it’s so exciting to see them succeed and build their own community around them. It really gets me fired up to take everything 2020 has to offer and I can’t wait to see where we grow and build from here!!
