Jumping Back Into Mirror’s Edge

This game has been sitting on my shelf gathering dust for a while now since I last played it years ago, and with the whole world seemingly in lockdown and people not being able to move around as much I thought what better way to spend the day than being active in-game? So let’s jump right into this one!

For those of you haven’t ever played Mirror’s Edge before the game is a first-person view action-adventure game that allows the player to step into the heroic role of Faith. Faith is trying to clear the name of her younger sister, Kate after she got framed for a murder. The two sisters haven’t seen much of each other since the two went their separate ways after their mother was killed in a protest that went violent. The death hit the family hard as Faith’s father blamed himself and ended up becoming an alcoholic. At a very young age, Faith decides to run away from home, living on the streets and stealing to survive. One night Faith got caught breaking into Mercury’s house, a man who secretly smuggles information across the city while avoiding the city guards. Instead of turning her away or calling the police, he decided to recruit her as a runner.
Runners are a group of individuals that use their skills to deliver and intercept important packages that contain high-value information, which then gets sold to the highest bidder. The job of a runner is not without its problems as Faith is sent on a run to deliver a package that triggered local authorities to get a bit trigger happy and so the story kicks off in an explosion of action.

What first caught my attention was that the video game was unlike anything I’ve played before. It’s not the kind of game in which you would dash in, shoot a few people, and get the goods. Although the game does allow you to pick up a weapon and shoot a few guards it’s not really the way the game was meant to be played. The gameplay is designed so that you try and outsmart your enemy by avoiding them or tactically dealing with them by using your surroundings. This definitely challenged me as I found myself reacting really slowly to what I had to do and failing a lot. It was probably the main reason why I never finished the game back then because I’m not the smartest cookie in the pack and I get bored of repeating the same level easily.
Overall it’s not a bad game, it’s really fast-paced and you are constantly on the move trying not to get shot at ALL THE TIME!! You would think Faith would have learned by now to wear a bulletproof vest OR maybe just resign. Does she? NOPE!
Surely the video game developers would make it a bit more realistic right? This girl needs some serious health insurance policy!!

Like I mentioned before, the game is rather fast-paced and it can be really rewarding if you manage to keep up with all the dodging, jumping, and maybe fighting if you’ve planned out your route perfectly. This does not always mean you can get the perfect run, I mean I had to play a mission OVER AND OVER again just to not die to something silly like not getting the perfect footing for a jump.
I’ve watched some gamers ever speed through the game like they are actually the character dashing through each level like its the most natural thing in the world. Which is really unfair compared to all the re-runs I had to do just to complete a simple mission. Not only does the game have a story mode but it also allows you to try and beat previous records set by others online. It could be fun if you have a few friends who like speed-based games, which I don’t because I always end up last.

What makes this game unique, and still very replayable even today, is that we don’t often see games like Mirror’s Edge. It’s unlike the other games I’m used to playing. I must say it was fun jumping and running on walls trying to find ways to get through a difficult enemy. It was a different experience to the horror survival games I’m used to playing and I’ll definitely be playing the next installment to the game.
