Passion and Heartache: The Top Romance Anime of 2023

Romance anime may not be everyone’s cup of tea, and I’ll be the first to admit that I usually lean more towards excellent horror anime than anything soft and mushy. However, the series I’m about to share with you truly captured my attention and led me to explore a genre filled with “happily ever afters.” Or so I hope, since I am yet to finish as few :)

Let’s dive into “My Happy Marriage,” which has become one of the best romance anime I’ve come across in a long time. This show is currently available on Netflix, and I sincerely hope they don’t disappoint with the ending of season 1 because each episode has been keeping viewers on the edge of their seats.

The story revolves around Miyo Saimori, the eldest daughter of the Saimori family. She has endured abuse and mistreatment at the hands of her stepmother and sister, all because she didn’t inherit the family’s supernatural abilities. Her early life was marked by suffering, neglect, and servitude to her own kin.
One day, her father calls her and announces her destiny: She is to marry a cruel and short-tempered man, so rumored. Without much notice, she is to pack and get ready to leave the following day.
Despite how she was treated she is still determined to be of service to her family and uphold the family name. While scared Miyo agrees and sets off the next morning, alone, scared to meet her fiance.

My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999” is an anime that kicks off with the life of a girl who experiences heartbreak when her boyfriend leaves her for another girl. Devastated by the sight of his newfound puppy love, she resolves to go to great lengths to win him back.
As she formulates her plan, Akane crosses paths with a socially awkward but VERY handsome gamer, whom she manages to persuade into becoming her pretend boyfriend… through bribery.

The story unfolds as both characters navigate the challenges and self-doubt that come with the territory of being a pretend couple.
Interestingly, the anime adaptation appears to be more viewer-friendly compared to the manga. The manga seems to have a bit more spice and may cater more to a mature teen audience.

Sugar Apple Fairy Tale” is a heartwarming story that revolves around Anna Halford, a serious young girl with an unwavering determination to follow in her mother’s footsteps and get the title of Silver Sugar Master—a recognition only given by royalty.
However, due to her limited exposure and lack of worldly experience, Anna realizes that she needs assistance in her quest to reach the capital and pursue her dreams.
In a twist of fate, she seeks the aid of a very handsome fairy, known for his short temper and sharp tongue, who agrees to become her bodyguard.

At first, Challe, the fairy, is hesitant to help due to his dislike for humans. Yet, as he spends more time with Anna, he becomes captivated by her unwavering determination and kind-hearted nature.
This unexpected partnership unfolds into a beautiful tale of growth and the bond that forms between two unlikely companions.

One of the most popular anime genres nowadays involves characters getting reincarnated into the novel world, and “Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke’s Mansion” is no exception. This intriguing story follows Rinko’s strange death and her sudden rebirth as a wealthy character within a novel.

Much like many other anime characters in similar situations, Raeliana possesses the knowledge of the story’s tragic ending, and she’s determined to rewrite her fate. She’s well aware that her life is destined to end at the hands of her fiancé, and she devises a clever plan to ensure her survival. This plan entangles her with a charming but humorously twisted duke, resulting in a cheesy engagement that forms the core of HER NEW story.

As for whether she’ll find love or not, well, I can’t say for sure—I’m yet to finish watching it myself! Nevertheless, this anime has a wonderfully cheesy charm that never fails to bring a smile to my face. It has me eagerly rooting for Raeliana to end up with her princely duke.
SOOOO, If you enjoy romance anime with a unique twist, this one is an absolute must-watch—exciting, charming, and full of romantic surprises.

I’ve discovered a fondness for these lighthearted and sweet romance anime, even if it’s not my typical favorite genre. 2023 seems to be offering a fresh new look at romantic stories, however, I cannot help but wonder if there are more fan favorites.

I know some also enjoyed shows like “Horimiya,” “The Dangers in My Heart,” and “Tomo-chan Is a Girl!”. I hope this list inspires others to explore the world of romance anime like I did and also fall in love with captivating stories.
