The Honest Confessions of a Failed VTuber
It feels like it’s been ages since I wrote a piece for “The Honest Confessions of a…” so today I thought it was a good time to be humourfull about my failures as a vtuber!

I’m a failed VTuber. I say that with love, a little embarrassment, and the same energy I use when my model’s hair clips through the ceiling for the 47th time. I stream. I make clips. I post. And yet the numbers stay politely small, like they’re trying not to hurt my feelings. (soft cry).
We call ourselves failures because we can’t stop comparing ourselves to the big shots. We watch someone with a million subscribers casually pull over 8k concurrent viewers while eating cereal, and we think, “Wow, I spent four hours last night talking to a chat that consisted of my own alerts and one very loyal panda emote.” The big names make it look effortless.
Meanwhile, I’m over here celebrating the day I hit 1k followers like I just won a tournament.
What actually counts as failing (the official, unofficial list)

- You have more subscribers than average viewers. The ratio is so bad it should be studied.
- Your highest superchat is still from your childhood friend who felt bad.
- You once peaked at 60 viewers, and immediately someone DM’s you saying the stream is broken.
- You’ve said “thanks for the raid!” to a raid of one person who immediately left.
- Your most-watched clip is 11 seconds of you realizing you were muted the entire time.
- You have a lore document, a backstory, a theme song, and three people who know any of it.
- You spent more time fixing the tracking than actually talking.
- The algorithm has never once heard of you, and you’re starting to take it personally.
If any of those sound familiar, congratulations. You’re one of us. Welcome to the club. Membership is free, and the snacks are whatever you remembered to eat before going live.
Why we keep doing it anyway

Because the comparison game is rigged. Those huge vtubers didn’t start huge. They started in the same empty rooms we sit in now. They just kept showing up long enough for the room to get a little less empty.
The funny part is that “failing” at this still gives you things a lot of people never get: a reason to sit down and create something, a tiny group of people who actually wait for you, and the slow, stubborn proof that you can get better at something just by refusing to quit.
How to stay motivated to continue failing (the wholesome-but-still-funny version)

Treat the small numbers like they’re the joke, not the tragedy. Your three regulars are not “only three.” They’re three people who chose to spend their evening with you instead of literally anything else on the internet. That’s not failure. That’s a very exclusive club.
Set goals that have nothing to do with the viewer count, things like:
“Today I will not forget to unmute.”
“Today I will actually finish the song instead of getting embarrassed and skipping it.”
“Today I will talk for a full hour without checking the viewer number every 40 seconds.”
Celebrate the tiny wins like they’re championships. First time someone used your emote unironically? That’s a moment. First time you didn’t crash the stream? Peak career achievement. First time a stranger said they liked your vibe? Frame it.

Remember that the work itself is the point. The model, the overlays, the terrible first takes, the late-night editing, the weird little community that forms when the same five people keep coming back, that’s the real content. The numbers are just a very loud, very unreliable scoreboard.
And if all else fails, remember this: every single successful vtuber you admire was once the person streaming to an empty room, wondering if they should just delete the model and go outside. They didn’t. You don’t have to either.
So I’ll keep failing. I’ll keep going live even when the only people in chat are the ones who always type “hi” and then immediately go AFK. I’ll keep making the same jokes, fixing the same tracking issues, and getting slightly less bad at this every month.
The point I am trying to make is that it is okay to feel like you are failing, but just remember the small achievements you have accomplished already.
They also matter.
Lots of Love
